To market, to market, to buy a fat pig . . .

. . . and home again, home again, jiggity jig.

I’m back from Penguicon, and trying to get caught up. One of the first things I did was to post a new article at TechRepublic’s IT Security weblog, titled Close unneeded ports on Unix/Linux systems. Now I just need to find out whether I’m supposed to be running a D&D game today or tomorrow.

I’ll probably post something with more substance here at SOB in the next couple days or so.

  1. Welcome back! How was Penguicon?

  2. It was a lot of fun. Among other things, I attended a panel discussion about math and elections featuring both Randall Munroe (XKCD) and Eric Raymond, saw a singing Tesla coils concert, and learned about D&D miniatures painting — to say nothing of all the stuff related to open source software. At only about $40 a person for registration, it’s definitely worth it (though of course there are all the other expenses to consider as well). On the drive home, the SigO and I took a tour of D&D gamer stores in Des Moines and Omaha. Oddly enough, the only place we ended up wanting to spend any money on game books was a used book store.

  3. Wow, Randall Monroe! Is he as funny in person as he is in the webcomic?

  4. He isn’t quite as funny in person — but he’s still pretty damned funny. Obviously pretty intelligent, too, despite being pretty left-leaning.
