best development comment all week (re: top)

In a discussion of whether top version 3.6 improvements will be merged with the 3.5 fork used in FreeBSD, Ted Mittelstaedt addressed how to help merge changes. Among the steps he outlined, this was my favorite:

Read the license and make sure some bozo hasn’t GNUified it.

Obviously, you’re likely to disagree it’s the “best” such comment this week if you’re on the FSF bandwagon. I’m not, thankfully.


  1. Now that’s funny… “GNUified”. I like that better than the “GPLed” that I have been using lately. It says a lot when a noun gets used as a verb. “I Googled for that.” “Windex the stove please.” “No! Don’t GNUify the code!” :)

  2. Meanwhile, I’ve been kicking around the idea of what to call Linux systems. We’re all familiar, I’m sure, with the argument over whether they’re “Linux” or “GNU/Linux”, but I’ve been thinking that it might actually be more appropriate to call it “GPL/Linux”. Oh, wait, I’ve got an even better idea. I’ll make it a new post.
