amongst the living again

Last Thursday, I embarked on a journey to surprise my mother on her birthday (which was Saturday). It went well. She was thoroughly surprised by my arrival (with the Significant Other accompanying). While there, I ate entirely too damned much food, discovered the really impressive expanse of the Cabela’s store in the area (big enough to basically have its own big game taxidermy museum), and fixed Mom’s computer. She’s still using MS Windows ME. Yes, really.

Afterward, I visited friends in another state, then swung homeward again.

When I returned Tuesday night, I started trying to get caught up. I updated software on three computers, started working my way through hundreds of emails, and checked out how Sterling “Chip” Camden handled guest blogging. I was quite pleased with the results, and wondered if people would be disappointed I’m back, since they’d then be stuck with my same old tired shtick again.

I meant to get something posted Wednesday, but all productivity in the second half of my day was destroyed by a headache that hurt so badly it caused me to puke. Yay, fun. I meant to get something posted Thursday, but I discovered that a software update on a Debian system had actually subtly broken header formatting on outgoing emails — that, coupled with lingering stupidity as an apparent aftereffect of my previous day’s headache (plus a couple other minor issues) caused me to spend much of the day fighting fires. Still not able to start getting ahead on things again, at the end of the day.

Today, here I am, giving you excuses. I’ll probably give you more information about Debian updates, FreeBSD configuration, good stuff that happened in connection with my trip, notions I’ve had about taxation and “freeways”, and other random bits of detritus from the workings of my own brain, in days to come. I finally feel caught up enough to actually post to SOB again.

  1. Welcome back! I for one welcome your same old shtick.

  2. Windows Me?! Ack – even if the hardware won’t support XP, at least take her back to 98SE — it was far more stable.

  3. If I had the time to get her acclimated to a new (or older) OS, I’d have gotten her set up with FreeBSD. I didn’t even have time to put Win98 SE on the thing, though — and didn’t have a legal copy of it handy. Since she’s on dial-up, it’s not a huge security issue, though. That’s probably the main reason ME has been as stable for her as it has, coupled with my excellent advice on installation and use of third party security software.

I did get her to upgrade Firefox from v0.8(?), though.
