  • Sir Malcolm Campbell drove 304.331 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935, becoming the first person to drive a vehicle over 300 miles per hour.
  • Australia, France, New Zealand, and the UK declared war on Germany in 1939, kicking World War II up a notch.
  • The Lakhva Ghetto uprising occurred in 1942, providing a strong argument for future generations against disarming civilians, assuming we can learn from our mistakes of the past. The infamous Warsaw Ghetto uprising began on 18 January the following year.
  • The Viking 2 spacecraft landed at Utopia Planitia on Mars to take the first ever close-up color photos of the red planet in 1976.
  • US Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rhenquist died on this day last year.
